Phooey! [Personal and Professional Growth]

In contemplating a career with one or more companies, a frequent question asked by those new to the organization is, "How can I ensure myself of having a successful career here?" Given the assumption that the person was reasonably competent and actually had a future with the company, my typical response was "Phooey!" In all those many years, my response always left the person at a loss for words. Phooey? Obviously, there had to be some explanation to accompany the simple expletive, but it was always a delight to see the looks of puzzlement on the young engineer?s face until my explanation was complete.     

Serum and urine metal levels in patients with metal-on-metal surface arthroplasty

The resurgence of metal-on-metal articulating surfaces for hip arthroplasty has also heightened concerns about the degree and magnitude of metal particle generation and the accompanying increase in circulating metal ion concentrations. In this study, we measured the concentration of chromium in serum and urine and the concentration of cobalt in serum in twenty-five patients with modern metal-on-metal surface arthroplasty of the hip in a prospective manner. The results showed that the mean post-operative chromium in serum levels were 22-fold, 23-fold and 21-fold higher at 3, 6 and 12 months post-operative, respectively, than pre-operative levels. The mean post-operative cobalt in serum levels were 8-fold, 7-fold and 6-fold higher at 3, 6 and 12 months post-operative, respectively, than pre-operative levels. The mean post-operative chromium in urine levels were 9-fold, 10-fold and 14-fold higher at 3, 6 and 12 months post-operative, respectively, than pre-operative levels. The values seen in this study with the current generation of surface arthroplasties are: (a) lower than those seen in an earlier generation of surface arthroplasties; (b) in the same range as those observed in association with metal-on-metal conventional total hip replacements, which typically have smaller head sizes; (c) higher than values observed in patients with conventional metal-on-polyethylene articulating couples.     

Miniature cylindrical ion trap mass spectrometer

A miniature cylindrical ion trap mass spectrometer is described, and preliminary data are presented. Functionality and performance of laboratory-scale instruments have been maintained to the extent possible in this battery-operated mass spectrometer. Capabilities include tandem mass spectrometry experiments. Custom-designed electronic components include the RF scanning and amplification system, data acquisition components, and lens power supplies, as well as a custom-software application. Direct leak and membrane introduction inlet systems are used for sample introduction. A mass/charge range of approximately 250 Th with unit mass resolution has been demonstrated.     

Impact of racial perspectives and contextual variables on marital trust and adjustment for African American couples.

This study examined the associations of racial perspectives that represent pro-African American, anti-African American, or a mixture of these beliefs with marital trust and adjustment for African American couples (N=93). Religious well-being and socioeconomic status (SES) were examined as contextual moderators. For husbands only, the anti-African American perspective was inversely associated with couple functioning, the mixed perspective was inversely associated with marital trust, and the pro-African American perspective predicted marital trust only for husbands having relatively low religious well-being and relatively high SES. The limited effects of pro-African American attitudes suggest the need to evaluate a wider range of these attitudes in future research. Also, findings corroborate suggestions for therapists to routinely assess and address both cultural pride and shame issues relevant to African American couple relationships. Semantic memory in Alzheimer's disease and the frontotemporal dementias: A longitudinal study of 236 patients.

Using semantic dementia (SD) as a reference point, the authors assessed semantic memory in four other neurodegenerative disorders: progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA), frontal variant frontotemporal dementia (fvFTD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). Individuals with SD were more impaired than other groups on semantic measures and showed a characteristic pattern across tasks: category fluency (CF) worse than letter fluency (LF), naming worse than comprehension, and visual and verbal comprehension equally affected, suggesting disruption to an amodal semantic system. Individuals with AD demonstrated a similar pattern to a milder degree. Although PNFA, fvFTD, and PCA groups had abnormal scores (relative to controls) on most semantic measures, their differing patterns across measures indicate that the apparent semantic impairment in these conditions is largely secondary to other factors. Managing People to Promote Innovation

There is growing evidence available to suggest that Human Resource Management (HRM) practice is an important predictor of organizational performance. Drawing upon organizational learning perspectives, we argue that HRM systems also have the potential to promote organizational innovation. We present longitudinal data from thirty‐five UK manufacturing organizations to suggest that effective HRM systems – incorporating sophisticated approaches to recruitment and selection, induction, appraisal and training – predict organizational innovation in products and production technology. We further show that organizational innovation is enhanced where there is a supportive learning climate, and inhibited (for innovation in production processes) where there is a link between appraisal and remuneration.     

Temperature effects on trigate SOI MOSFETs

Trigate silicon-on-insulator (SOI) MOSFETs have been measured in the 5-400 K temperature range. The device fin width and height is 45 and 82 nm, respectively, and the p-type doping concentration in the channel is 6/spl times/10/sup 17/ cm/sup -3/. The subthreshold slope varies linearly with temperature as predicted by fully depleted SOI MOS theory. The mobility is phonon limited for temperatures larger than 100 K, while it is limited by surface roughness below that temperature. The corner effect, in which the device corners have a lower threshold voltage than the top and sidewall Si/SiO/sub 2/ interfaces, shows up at temperatures lower than 150 K.     

Characterization of ZnS grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition on GaAs(100) using t-butyl mercaptan and dimethylzinc

ZnS has been grown on GaAs(100) substrates by atmospheric pressure metal–organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) using dimethylzinc (DMZn) and t-butyl mercaptan (t-BuSH). The effects of the reactant gas phase molar ratio and the growth temperature on the characteristics of the material grown have been investigated. The structural quality of the layer is demonstrated by X-ray rocking curve half-widths of less than 300 arcsec for the epilayers. There is little significant pre-reaction and the layers are of excellent surface morphology and layer uniformity.     

Phase 1B ventricular arrhythmia in the dog: localized reentry within the mid-myocardium

Our aim was to investigate the relationships between defensiveness and repression, on the one hand, and self-reported stressor exposure and resting blood pressure, on the other hand. In addition, different operationalizations of defensiveness and repression were compared. Participants were 310 male and 90 female employees representing a wide range of occupations. Before a medical examination, all subjects completed questionnaires measuring defensiveness, anxiety, repression, daily hassles, and life events. After controlling for potentially confounding variables, multiple regression analyses revealed an inverse association between defensiveness and self-reported number of daily hassles and a positive link between defensiveness and resting systolic blood pressure. In general, the interaction between defensiveness and anxiety (representing repression) did not add to the predictive power of defensiveness and anxiety alone. The results support the notion that defensive individuals tend to underreport problems, while exhibiting elevated resting blood pressures.     

A prospective randomized comparison of epidural infusion of fentanyl and intravenous administration of morphine by patient-controlled analgesia after radical retropubic prostatectomy

In a prospective, randomized study, continuous infusion of epidural fentanyl citrate (group E) was compared with patient-controlled intravenously administered morphine sulfate (group P) for analgesia in 66 men after radical retropubic prostatectomy. Although both methods provided satisfactory analgesia, the mean comfort level scores were lower (that is, greater comfort) in group E than in group P at all observation times. The difference in mean resting comfort level scores between groups E and P was statistically significant (P < or = 0.05) at 9 of the 11 observation times. In addition, significant differences in comfort level scores were noted at 8 of the 11 observation times during deep breathing, 5 of 11 during coughing, and 3 of 9 during ambulation. Maximal and minimal comfort level scores recorded by each patient during the course of the study were significantly lower (that is, less pain) in group E than in group P for all four categories of activity. The percentage of patients who reported no pain was significantly higher in group E than in group P at 9 of 11 observation times during resting and 5 of 11 observation times during deep breathing. No significant differences were noted in side effect profiles or duration of hospital stay. In summary, when two effective methods of analgesia used after radical retropubic prostatectomy were compared prospectively, patients who received epidural infusion of fentanyl were more comfortable than those with patient-controlled intravenous administration of morphine, as evidenced by lower mean, maximal, and minimal comfort level scores and a greater proportion of patients with complete relief of pain.
